URI Professor returns from Cuba

A URI professor is back in Rhode Island after a recent trip to Cuba.

Political Science Professor Maureen Moakley along with 20 students traveled to the island over the January break.

The group was there for 10 days.

They spoke with politicians, professionals and artists who said Cubans were optimistic that tourism would bring jobs to the country.

“What we’re going to see is more tourism…it’s going to be a boost… but it will also be a boon because they don’t have the infrastructure to handle hordes of tourists,” said Moakley.

Professor Moakley also plans to reach out to the Providence Chamber of Commerce to co-ordinate a trip to Cuba with local business leaders and Rhode Island Public Officials.
