Former State Senator Stephen Alves was arrested for DUI after being involved in an overnight car accident in Lincoln.

State Police say they received multiple 911 calls reporting a multi-vehicle crash on Route 146 on Jan. 15 around 11:51 p.m. According to police, it appeared that Alves had rear ended a tractor trailer. The accident left Alves’ vehicle disabled and a third vehicle traveling behind Alves swerved to avoid striking his vehicle but subsequently lost control of his vehicle and struck the guard rail.

Police say when they made contact with Alves at the scene he appeared to be intoxicated. Alves then failed all the Field Sobriety Tests administered by police and was placed under arrest. He refused to take a breathalyzer test.

He was arraigned at the state police barracks for driving under the influence and released on $1,000 personal recognizance.

Alves served as a state senator from 1990 to 2008.
