Retail store J.C. Penny will close its door in the Providence Place Mall at some point in 2015, according to a spokesperson for the mall.

In an email, Spokesperson Dante Bellini says, “We never like to see a retailer close shop; however, this was a decision made at the corporate level of JCP.  It’s too soon to determine what impact, if any, this will have on the property.  We are always looking at options to enhance our already stellar retailer, dining and overall experiential line-up at Providence Place.  At this time, we have no details to share with you; but we know when that time arrives, our shoppers will be just as excited as we are.”

J.C. Penney opened at Providence Place in 2005.

A spokesperson for J.C Penney has confirmed the location will close on or about August 28.

“We continually evaluate our store portfolio to determine whether there’s a need to close or relocate underperforming stores.  Reviews such as these are essential in meeting our long-term goals for future company growth.  While it’s never an easy decision to close stores, especially due to the impact on our valued associates and customers, we feel this is a necessary business decision,” he said in a statement.

The spokesperson also said that eligible associates who do not remain with the company will receive separation benefits, and, if possible, we will assist associates in identifying other job opportunities at nearby JCPenney stores.

He also said the company will be offering all associates an on-site career training class which will assist in writing resumes, filling out applications, answering interview questions and more.
