Providence welcomes new mayor today

The city of Providence will welcome its new mayor today.

Jorge Elorza is set to be officially inaugurated as Mayor of Providence today at 2 p.m. on the steps of Providence City Hall, although a private swearing in was held at 12 a.m. Monday morning at Elorza’s home.

Probate Court Judge John E. Martinelli administered the oath of office.

The incoming Democrat will take the place of Angel Taveras, who ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2013.

Tonight the new mayor will celebrate with residents at the Cranston Street Armory. The event is free however tickets are required for entry.
