NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A new animal shelter under construction in North Providence is expected to open by the beginning of the upcoming year.

The $2.6 million shelter will replace the old facility at 900 Smithfield Road.

The 6,500 square ft. building designed by animal control directors, will hold approximately 30 to 40 pets.

Mayor Charles Lombardi said the shelter will be shared between the cities of North Providence, Johnston, and Smithfield to provide cost saving to each community.
