Tiverton Police Officer arrested for forging town treasurer’s signature 30 times

TIVERTON, RI (WLNE) – A Tiverton Police Officer was arrested Wednesday for falsely producing the signature of the Tiverton Town Treasurer, Rhode Island State Police (RISP) say.

William R. Munroe, 56, of Fall River, Massachusetts was arrested for 30 counts of Forgery.

Munroe was previously charged with 14 counts of larceny in December 2018.

State Police started a new investigation into Monroe after the town of Tiverton filed a complaint of forgery back on June 11.

Back in May, the Town Treasurer’s office had difficulty processing a Tiverton police officer’s payroll deduction, RISP said.

The investigation allegedly revealed that 33 disbursement forms were submitted by Munroe between 2013 and 2019 using the Town Treasurer’s signature.

RISP confirmed that the Treasurer’s office did not sign nor authorize a total of 30 disbursement forms submitted by Munroe.

The total withdrawal amount from Munroe was $53,900.

Munroe was arraigned and released on $10,000 Personal Recognizance.

He is currently on unpaid leave with the Tiverton Police Department, according to Chief Patrick Jones.

Munroe is due back in court Aug. 13.
