‘Adaptive Gym’ opened inside Cranston YMCA

CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) – A big moment for the Ocean State Tuesday as officials opened the state’s first “Adaptive Gym”, a facility aimed at helping people with spinal cord injuries and other types of paralysis exercise and work out.

In partnership with the YMCA of Greater Providence, The Gary Balletto Foundation opened the gym within the Cranston YMCA located on Park Avenue Tuesday afternoon.

The new exercise space will offer the following equipment and amenities:

  • Individualized Fitness Plans 
  • Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Bikes
  • Standing Frames
  • Adaptive Cardio Equipment
  • Adaptive Strength Machines
  • Galileo Tilt Table
  • Personal Training

Through this programming we are able to meet the health and fitness needs for a segment of our population that is often overlooked,” said Steven O’Donnell, Greater Providence YMCA CEO “There are close to close to 20,000 people in the state living with some form of paralysis and thanks to Gary’s inspirational work, and that of the Gary Tiger Balletto Foundation- the Y can continue to live its mission in helping everyone in our community.” 

The space allows people of all abilities to work out with their friends, families and peers.
