PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Rhode Island’s new education commissioner will be addressing the Providence School Committee’s council on elementary and secondary education Tuesday evening.
A meeting tonight will determine if the state will get involved in fixing Providence schools, something Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza supports.
“We cant be committed to one specific thing at this point,” Elorza said. “It’s more of a shared value . . . that we then put into effect.”
Angélica Infante-Green is seeking to fundamentally transform the broken Providence Public School District, by taking over Providence Public Schools.
Infante-Green has proposed using the authority of the 1997 Crowley Act, which gives the state the power to take control of an under-performing school district’s budget and program.
