Puerto Rican community demands governor’s resignation

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — Proudly waving the flag of Puerto Rico, protestors here Monday demanded Governor Ricardo Rosselló resign.
“There’s millions and millions of people in Puerto Rico right now protesting, and that’s why we’re here,” said Roberto Lopez of New Bedford. “We’re supporting them, because they’re our families.”
Those families are still reeling from Hurricane Maria and the persistent debt crisis.
Protesters say they’re at the breaking point, after the leak of vulgar messages and allegations of corruption involving relief funds.
“It’s beyond forgiveness,” said Yael Contreras of New Bedford. “This is something that concerns not only Puerto Ricans but everybody, every American here. Their money is going to waste.”
Rosselló says he will not seek re–election, but protestors insist that’s not enough.
“Resign to leave this open for somebody else to govern Puerto Rico, to do the best for Puerto Rico,” said Will Torres of New Bedford. “We’re tired, Ricky, and we want you out.”
Protesters say even if Rosselló does not resign, the demonstrations are changing the political climate.
“Our generation is not going to see the change,” said Contreras. “But we have kids. Our sons, daughters, our grandchildren. Maybe someday they can have a better future.”
