PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) – The Central Falls man arrested Wednesday night for the murder in a decades-old cold case out of Pawtucket was released on bail Friday.

Joao Montero, 59, walked out of the ACI Friday night after posting $5,000 bail, hours after the state dropped its objection to bail, sources tell ABC 6.

Monteiro was arrested Wednesday night and charged with the 1988 murder of 10-year-old Christine Cole, a case that had one unsolved for over 30 years.

Cole went missing while going to pick up groceries in January 1988.

Her body was found nearly two months later on the beach at Conimicut Point Park in Warwick almost two months after she disappeared.

Recent DNA testing led investigators to Monteiro.

The Attorney General’s Office would not comment further.
