Blue Cross lands state employee benefits contract

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – Blue Cross Blue Shield o Rhode Island has landed a deal with Rhode Island to administer the state’s medical benefits.

The company will replace United Healthcare, which has served as the state’s third-party administrator for its medical plan since 2005.

We are looking forward to working with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Rhode Island and ensuring a seamless transition for our state employees and non-Medicare-eligible retirees,” said the state’s Director of Administration Michael DiBiase. “We are also pleased to renew our contract with CVS Caremark, which has overseen our pharmacy benefits program for many years. Both companies have deep ties to the community and will provide significant value to our members and to the taxpayers of Rhode Island.”

CVS Caremark will continue to administer the state’s pharmacy benefits plan.

Blue Cross Blue Shield will officially take over in January 2020.
