Police chase from Rehoboth leads to multi-car crash that shut down I-195 in East Providence

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A police chase that started in Rehoboth led to a multi-car crash that shut down Interstate 195 in East Providence Tuesday night.

Police said they conducted a motor vehicle stop at about 7:30 p.m. on Moulton Street for a speeding violation.

Sgt. Brian Ramos said Wednesday that when officers approached the car, the drive took off.

Ramos said that during the chase, the driver, identified as Cary Guy, tried to hit cruisers twice.

The car continued on Interstate 195 westbound in Rehoboth and crossed the median strip and started traveling west in the wrong direction.

Ramos said they eventually stopped chasing the car, which continued to drive the wrong-way through Seekonk and East Providence.

The sergeant said Guy, who’s from Dighton, failed to stop in East Providence, ultimately crashing on I-195 in East Providence.

Multiple people were taken to the hospital. Their injuries appeared to be non-life threatening.

Guy, 29, was arrested and faces multiple charges related to the crash, including driving to endanger, speeding, and failure to stop for police.

Ramos said the 29-year-old is well-known to police and has 97 adult criminal charges in Massachusetts, many of those are related to Guy failing to stop for police.

Back in 2017, Guy led police on a high speed chase from Cape Cod to Middleboro. Six local police departments, as well as Massachusetts State Police, took part in that chase.
