SCITUATE, R.I. (WLNE) — A chlorine gas leak broke out at a water treatment facility in Scituate Wednesday morning.

Providence Water said that public safety agencies were notified and have since responded to the scene.

Chris Hunter, a spokesperson for Providence Water, said out of an abundance of caution, the facility was temporary shut down.

No Providence Water employees were injured, Hunter said.

“The leak has been identified and isolated. The Scituate water treatment facility is now back online and operating utilizing our backup chlorine gas supply,” said the spokesman.

Hunter said customers’ water is safe.
