PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – At approximately 8:55am on July 6th , Westport Police received a call from a witness regarding a serious collision involving a motorcycle and an additional vehicle at the intersection of American Legion Highway and Gifford Road.
The motorcyclist, identified as Paul LaFrance, 28, of Fall River, was treated at the scene and transported to Charlton Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash.
Initial investigations by Westport Police revealed that the victim was operating a motorcycle reported stolen from Somerset the day prior.
Based on witness reports, Westport Police believe that Mr. LaFrance was operating westbound at a high rate of speed on American Legion Highway, approaching the intersection of Gifford Road, when the motorcycle collided with another motor vehicle moving south.
This marks the second fatality in just two weeks on the American Legion Highway involving a motorcycle.
The Westport Police Department urges drivers to keep in mind that motorcyclists numbers increase during the summer months, and to not only check side mirrors, but also each vehicle’s blind spot.
