Providence celebrates Cape Verdean Independence Day

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The city of Providence on Tuesday celebrated Cape Verdean Independence Day with a flag-raising ceremony at City Hall.
Francisco Carvalho, who’s the mayor of Cape Verde’s capital Praia, attended the ceremony and received a citation as well.
Cape Verde officially declared its independence from Portugal on July 5, 1975. The island country off of the west coast of Africa has a population of almost 500,000, according to their most recent census held in 2021.
Rhode Island has a larger Cape Verdean-American population than any state besides Massachusetts, according to the 2010 U.S. Census.
