BROCKTON, Mass. (WLNE) – The mayor of Brockton has passed away suddenly, city officials announced Wednesday.

The Brockton City Council said Wednesday morning that Mayor Bill Carpenter died overnight.

The 62-year-old was first elected in 2013 and was serving his third term. Carpenter announced in June that he had pulled nomination papers to seek reelection for a fourth term.

The cause of his death is unclear.

City Council President Moises Rodrigues will be the acting mayor until January 2020.
