Divers recover body of man who drowned in North Smithfield reservoir

NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WLNE) — A body of man who drowned in a North Smithfield reservoir was recovered Wednesday night.

North Smithfield Fire Chief David Chartier said a call for help for a missing swimmer at the Slatersville Reservoir came in around 6:15 p.m.

According to the chief, witnesses said a man in his 20s jumped from the trellis came to the surface and then went back under.

Friends he was with were unable to save the swimmer, according to the chief.

Chartier said dive crews from several communities responded and a Smithfield dive team recovered the body.

“Unfortunately, this has been the site of several drownings, the police do and the town does what it can to keep off of these trellises and to keep the kids from going up there to dive off, to swim and unfortunately they make their way over there and this is the result,” said Chartier.

The name or where the man is from have not yet been released.
