ISO New England: Power grid prepared for continued heat

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — ISO New England said Friday that the power grid is prepared for the continued heat wave.

Matthew Kakley, a spokesman for the company, said that they expect to have the resources to meet the energy needs of Rhode Islanders in the coming days.

“In the event the region experiences issues (unexpectedly high demand, unanticipated generator outages, etc.), the ISO’s system operators have a number of tools available before they would be forced to initiate controlled outages,” Kakley wrote in a statement.

The tools he mentions include importing power from neighboring regions, utilizing reserve power sources, or asking the public to try and conserve energy.

Kakley added that the electricity demand during this week’s heat wave was on par with what the company has seen in recent years during summer’s hottest days.
