CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Republican candidate for the District 2 Congress seat Allan Fung has made his first comments in regards to House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s visit to Rhode Island this past weekend.

Through a spokesman Monday night, Fund said he welcomed McCarthy over the weekend to the Ocean State.

“I introduced him to business owners of all political persuasions – including Democrats and Independents — who told him straight out that for the first time in their lives they were going to vote Republican because the policies that have pushed inflation to 40-year highs are absolutely killing their businesses – their American dream,” Fung said in a statement.

According to Fung, McCarthy said he expects the former Cranston mayor to put his constituents first and that, if elected, Fung would be on committees that would be beneficial to those in his district.

“It’s time to lift everyone up here in Rhode Island, and I’m going to work really hard across all party lines and across ideological spectrums to work for you. I ask you to join me as we take our success from Cranston to the halls of Congress,” concluded the statement.

Fung’s remarks comes after he and his team remained mum on McCarthy’s visit prior too and immediately afterwards.

Several Democrats seeking the seat blasted Fung for hosting McCarthy over the weekend.

“Allan Fung is rolling out the red carpet for Kevin McCarthy and his radical far-right agenda, proving once again he is out-of-touch with the voters of the Second District,” said Campaign Manager Bryan McNamara for Sarah Morgenthau.

The Facts About Fung Twitter account, which is paid for the Seth Magaziner campaign, also threw a jab at the Cranston Republican.

“The fact McCarthy is campaigning for Allan Fung in RI confirms what we already knew — Fung and the extremists Republicans would be a disaster for Rhode Island seniors, Rhode Islander workers and Rhode Island women,” read the tweet.

Fung is the lone Republican on the ticket, while six Democrats are vying for their party’s nomination.

In addition to Magaziner and Morgenthau, Spencer Dickinson, Omar Bah, Joy Fox and David Segal are seeking the seat.
