PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence Police Department warned automobile owners Thursday of a social media trend that promotes car theft.

From July 1 to Aug. 11, Police have responded to around 14 thefts involving Kia and Hyundai automobiles. The uptick is attributed to a recent TikTok trend called “Kia Boyz.”

Hyundai and Kia models are at higher risk because thieves can jack most of those cars with just a USB charging cable.

“It has become very easy for thieves to steal some late-model Hyundai and Kia cars that are not equipped with a push-button ignition,” Providence police said in a Instagram post. “The thieves break into the car, remove the trim under the steering column to access the ignition, and use pliers or a USB charging cord to start the engine.”

Drivers are advised to park in well-lit areas and in garages if possible.

Kia customers with questions regarding their Kia vehicle should contact the Consumer Assistance Center directly at 1-800-333-4542.
