North Kingstown school committee member resigns in midst of ‘fat checks’ investigation
NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — A member of the North Kingstown school committee announced his immediate resignation Thursday.
Jake Mather was appointed by the town in council in 2019 and ran a successful election in 2020.
“It has been my goal to be a voice for my community and an advocate for our students and the amazing educators in our district,” Mather said in a statement. ” It has become clear to me, however, that I am no longer able to do this in a productive way.”
The resignation comes in the midst of multiple in midst of an investigation relating to alleged “fat checks” at North Kingstown High School this past school year.
Michael Waterman, interim superintendent for the North Kingstown School Department, issued a statement in response to Mather’s announcement.
“I would like to thank Mr. Mather for his three years of service to the North Kingstown School community. I wish Mr. Mather and his family the best in the future.”
Since the the allegations, both the superintendent and assistant superintendent stepped down from their positions.
Several lawsuits have been filed by students and their families.
