‘They had no idea where they are,’ says head of Martha’s Vineyard Democratic Committee on migrants
EDGARTOWN, Mass. (WLNE) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flew nearly 50 Venezuelan migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, who landed on the island Wednesday.
DeSantis’ communication director, Taryn Fenske, said this was part of an effort to move undocumented immigrants into sanctuary destinations.
“It was very unnerving to know there is a governor in this country that would traffic human people to another state and just dump them there like garbage,” said Carla Cooper, chair of Martha’s Vineyard Democratic Committee.
Cooper said that migrants had “no idea where they are,” and that residents of the island were given no notice.
“They were told they would be coming somewhere there was jobs and housing waiting for them,” said Cooper. “They landed here and no one was here to welcome them.”
Despite lack of notice, volunteers jumped into action, providing beds and meals to the refugees.
