Steamship Authority considers ferry fare hikes for passengers

FALMOUTH, Mass. (WLNE) — The Steamship Authority is considering ferry fare hikes on its Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket routes to counteract high fuel prices.
On the Martha’s Vineyard route, one-way tickets for vehicles will increase $3 or $5 depending on the season, the Cape Cod Times reports.
During peak season, one-way tickets for vehicles would increase to $10 on weekends. Vehicles over 20 feet wound see an 8% increase in fares.
Steamship Authority officials are also proposing a $.50 increase for single adult tickets.
For the Nantucket route, one-way tickets for vehicles would increase between $9 or $14 depending on the season, according to the paper.
During peak season, one-way tickets for vehicles will increase by $20 on weekends during peak season.
Passenger fares are expected to increase by $1 for single adult tickets, and $3 on the high-speed ferry.
A public meeting about the rate hikes is scheduled to be held virtually Monday.
