The head of Rhode Island's new health insurance
marketplace says “exceptionally high'' call volumes and walk-in traffic are
stretching its ability to enroll people ahead of the deadline for coverage
beginning Jan. 1.

Individuals and families have until the end
of the day Tuesday to enroll online through HealthSource RI.
The customer call center will be open until 9 p.m. Payments must be made by
Jan. 6.

HealthSource RI Director Christine Ferguson
says there have also been issues with identification and income verification
that have made the enrollment process “time consuming and frustrating.''

More than 2,800 Rhode Islanders enrolled in
commercial plans through HealthSource
RI during the first two weeks of
December. Nearly 2,700 signed up in October and November.

Open enrollment will continue through March
31.
