WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) – A husband and wife were arraigned in Kent County Court Friday after allegedly leading police on a wild chase across several town lines.
Patricia Chivers, 33, pleaded not guilty to charges of felony assault, reckless driving/eluding a police officer in a high-speed pursuit, obstructing an officer in the execution of their duty, and operating with a suspended license.
Matthew Chivers, 29, pleaded not guilty to a charge of obstructing an officer in the execution of their duty.
Both also pleaded not guilty to credit card fraud charges from earlier this year.
But the incident that got them arrested was that high-speed chase Thursday.
Cranston Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle parked in a field near Laten Knight Road around 7:00 a.m. Thursday. Responding officers located a Nissan sedan with Connecticut license plates. The occupants, identified as Chivers and Chivers, appeared to be asleep.
After officers made contact with the couple, they fled in the vehicle, running over one officer’s foot in the process.
Police pursued the vehicle along Hope Road into Scituate, Coventry, West Warwick, and East Greenwich, joined along the way by East Greenwich and Rhode Island State Police.
The suspect vehicle later crashed into another vehicle on South County Trail in the area of Frenchtown Road. Police apprehended Patricia Chivers on scene, and later apprehended the fleeing Matthew Chivers at a nearby Dunkin Donuts.
Patricia Chivers will be presented as a bail violator and also has an active Superior Court Bench Warrant for Possession of a Schedule I Narcotic. She was released from the Adult Correctional Institution on April 3. She pleaded not guilty, and was ordered held without bail and is due back in court June 19.
Matthew Chivers will be presented as a Probation Violator based on a previous sentence for Injuring or Tampering with a Vehicle. He was released from the ACI on May 15.
Both suspects will also be arraigned on 3 charges each of Fraudulent Use of a Credit Cards Over $100 and Conspiracy in connection with a string of unrelated incidents in January.
Police said the operator of the vehicle that was struck on South County Trail suffered minor injuries and was transported to Kent County Hospital for treatment. The Cranston Police officer who was struck was treated for a foot injury and returned to duty.
Because of earlier bail and parole violations, the Chivers are being held without bail.
