TIVERTON, R.I. (WLNE) – A surprise delivery occurred at the Tiverton Police Department Monday as officers helped a woman in labor give birth to a baby girl in the parking lot.
An expecting Tiverton couple was on their way to the hospital Monday afternoon when they realized they weren’t going to make it in time, so they pulled into the police station parking lot.
“They pretty much just showed up on scene and within about 5 minutes the baby was coming out,” said Tiverton Police Officer Matthew Braun.
Officer Braun rushed outside to assist the couple. Shortly behind him was Fire Lieutenant Daniel Murphy.
With the help of the first responders, the couple delivered the baby in the parking lot, before an ambulance could arrive.
“The baby was delivered in the passenger seat of the car.” Said Lieutenant Murphy.
“I think the father was more in shock than anything, with anxiety, about as much as we had. The mother did great; the baby came out healthy, happy, and screaming.”
Lieutenant Murphy and Officer Braun helped keep the new parents calm during delivery, before an ambulance could get there.
The new father then cut the umbilical cord in a rescue.
“You don’t bring life into the world everyday,” said Lieutenant Murphy, so it’s a proud moment.”
Mom, dad and baby were still at the hospital Tuesday afternoon, but plan to bring their baby to meet the first responders as soon as they get out.
Lieutenant Murphy said he went by the hospital Monday night to check on the family, and reported they were all doing just fine.
