Teen killed in Providence sledding accident

A teen has been killed in a tragic sledding accident in Neutaconkanut Hill Park in Providence.
The incident happened on Wednesday, Jan. 2. at 4:40 p.m. Police and fire personnel were called to the park to respond to a report of a 17-year-old girl injured while sledding. The teenager, identified as Alexandria Alvarez, was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Alvarez, who goes by Allie, was a former student at Greene High School in West Greenwich. On Thursday the school held a moment of silence to honor Alvarez.
The 88-acre park is a historic park in the Silver Lake/ Olneyville area in Providence. It is known as a popular sledding location in the winter.
As a result of the incident, the park has been closed to sledding. The city of Providence says it now plans to install fences in the park to keep people who are sledding or participating in other recreational activities on the trail. In addition the city plans to staff the park with a ranger.
