RI’s minimum wage to rise on Jan. 1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – The lowest paid workers in Rhode Island will be getting a bit of a raise in the new year.
Under a new law to take effect on Jan. 1, the minimum wage for workers in the Ocean State will go to $7.75 per hour, up from the current $7.40 per hour.
The increase, the first in five years, was approved by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. Lincoln Chafee in June.
State labor numbers indicate that about 10,000 people make the minimum wage in Rhode Island.
Since the last increase five years ago, Massachusetts has increased its hourly minimum wage to $8 and Connecticut has gone to $8.25.
