Recent Coventry HS Grad, Basketball Player Dies in Crash
An emotional embrace as friends of Douglas Auger gather at a make shift memorial. The 18–year–old was killed after the car he was driving struck a tree on Fish Hill Road in Coventry.
Auger was the only one in the car at the time of the crash.
Sara Cayouette got the news in a text message Friday morning.
“At first I didn't think it was possible, that he's gone,” said Cayouette. “And after seeing everyone's reactions I knew it's real.”
A wet trail marks where the car went off the windy road, and into the woods. Debris litters the ground, which is now spotted with orange flags, as police investigate the fatal crash.
Friends placed flowers at the scene in Douglas' memory.
“He was so nice to everybody, ” said Lauren Coons who went to Coventry High with the teen. “He was great to be around…he was awesome.”
“He was always a laid back kid,” said Connor Holden who grew up a few houses down from Auger. “Everyone liked him. Everyone wanted to know him.”
“He's so care free,” said Cayouette. “He didn't let things get to him. That's why he was so easy to get along with. He didn't judge people.”
Auger was a 2012 graduate of Coventry High School. He was a stand out athlete, playing basketball all 4 years for the Oakers.
Friends say he had a bright future, and was planning on attending CCRI in the fall.
“He's not like your typical teenager,” said Coons. “He was a good kid. It shouldn't have happened.”
Grief councilors will be available at the High School Saturday from 9-12.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
