Gas price wars in Cranston

Gas prices dropped for the ninth straight week in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, but for some that's still not low enough. In Cranston, there's a battle going on over who has the lowest prices.

We're talking about gas prices 20 cents lower than the state average. They get so low, because several gas stations, right next to each other on one Cranston block, are competing for customers.

There's a gas war on one Cranston block. Four stations, with different prices are competing for the same customers.

Some customers travel miles there to get the best deal. It's a dream for drivers, but it can be a headache for the people who run these stations. Because if they don't have the cheapest price, they won't get the customers.

Monday, the running rate was $3.39 a gallon at the Cumberland Farms, and right next door it was $3.37 a gallon at BMC Petroleum.

It sounds cheap, but there were two other stations on the strip selling gas for even less, American Performance Petroleum and Food 'N Fuel”.

“We see in the morning the signs for their gas stations, like $3.37, we always post like two cents less than them,” said gas station worker Bishouy Sharoubim.

Those prices were about a quarter cheaper per gallon than some Providence stations. It was a breath of fresh air for customers who usually travel to Massachusetts to save a buck.

“It's only a few cents, but it adds up when you're getting twenty or thirty dollars of something like that, you know it adds right up,” said driver Thomas Hord.

Rhode Island's gas prices are down six cents from last week. Massachusetts' are down five cents. The Bay State's prices are still cheaper.
