MANSFIELD, MASS (WLNE) – The gift of motherhood. A local mom who battled years of infertility, before having children of her own, wanted to offer someone else the chance to carry a child.
So she decided to donate her uterus.
To say April Lane, 39, of Mansfield, Mass has her hands full, is an under statement.
Lane and her husband have five children all under the age of 7, but the journey to build their family has been anything but easy.
For years, Lane and her husband couldn’t get pregnant.
“We were diagnosed with unexplained infertility,” Lane said. “Reproductively independently we were okay but for some reason our body chemistry when our sperm and egg met our embryos just didn’t do well.”
Lane and her husband decided to adopt their son
Then surprisingly Lane got pregnant with their second son.
Naturally, and through IVF treatments, their family became what it is today.
“It took us 9 and a half years to build our family,” Lane added.
It was after that she decided to give someone else the gift of motherhood.
Late last year, she donated her uterus to an anonymous woman.
“The recipient lived her whole live thinking she couldn’t get pregnant so being able to give that to her was worth it, “ she said.
It’s all part of a clinical trial at Baylor University Medical Center in Texas, that Dr. Liza Johannesson has been leading since 2016.
To date, 13 women have donated their uterus.
