Man gets 15 year sentence in crash that killed 1, injured 2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ A Connecticut man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for a Rhode Island crash that killed a Massachusetts man and injured two others.

Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha says 41-year-old James Beattie, of Danielson, pleaded no contest this week in Providence Superior Court. As part of a plea deal, he’ll serve more than nine years at the Adult Correctional Institution in Cranston, with the rest of the sentence suspended.

Beattie will also pay a $5,000 and have his driver’s license suspended at least five years.

Prosecutors say Beattie had cocaine and marijuana in his system when he crossed the center line while driving on Route 101 in Foster on Jan. 29, 2017. Beattie’s car struck an oncoming vehicle head on, killing 40-year-old Orlando Colon, of Southbridge.
