LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) – Tucked away in the corner of the R1 Indoor Karting complex in Lincoln sits a new and unique bar.

R1 Indoor Karting CEO Pieter Martens says, “Bringing people together to have old fashioned fun.”

Opened February 1, Axe Bar is the first axe throwing bar open to the public in Rhode Island.  Here’s how it works: First, you get a safety briefing and axe throwing lesson

Martens says, “Of course we call it axe throwing.  But during the briefing, we will tell you it’s actually more like axe swing and release.”

After the basics, the competition is on.  I couldn’t wait to give it a try.

First, Martens showed me the two handed method.  That method was not my strong suit.

He also showed me how to throw the lighter axe with one hand.  I didn’t have much luck there either.

But, I finally found my stride going back to the heavier axe using one hand, and from then on it was bullseye after bullseye.

By the way, here’s a popular question they get: Is there a safety concern mixing alcohol with throwing an axe?  Their staff is trained to keep everyone safe.

Martens says, “It’s all about that person who is there, the axe coach, to interfere if he sees it’s not safe anymore.”
