Beach fees to increase

LINCOLN, R.I. (WLNE) — With snow on the ground many people are probably dreaming about warmer weather. But going to the beach this summer could cost you more. The governor is looking to raise the cost of going to state parks and beaches. She says that money will go towards improving the experience of using them.

A mid February fantasy many are probably having, dreaming about spending the day on the beach.

“Of course, Scarborough,” says Jonathan Nierman of North Smithfield.

With snow as our current reality, it’s hard to believe beach season is kind of around the corner. Governor Raimondo and the Department of Environmental Management announced something that could make people hesitate before hitting the sand. An increase in fees.

“For things like beach parking, campgrounds, renting a pavilion for a day,” says Janet Coit, the Director of the DEM.

The exact amount isn’t being announced just yet.

“They’re user fees. Nobody is talking about doing what was done a few years ago and doubling the fees, I certainly would never support that,” says Governor Gina Raimondo.

The money will cover the cost of a staffing increase at the DEM.

“I’ve talked to a lot of people and I think folks would agree a little bit more to have a better beach experience, cleaner bathrooms better maintained pavilions might be something that makes sense,” says Governor Raimondo.

And since it is the Ocean State some agree the price is worth paying.

“Unless it was a drastic increase, honestly 5 or 10 dollars probably would not deter us from doing the pass again,” says Nierman.

Another revenue source being considered by the governor is partnering with rental companies on things like boogie boards, kayaks, umbrellas and chairs.
