DEM schedules aquatic weed treatments next week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced that it will be treating three ponds to control infestations of invasive aquatic weeds.
Breakheart Pond in Exeter, Carolina Trout Pond in Richmond, and Shippee Sawmill Pond in Foster will all be treated on Tuesday June 27. The treatment is targeting weeds like variable milfoil, algae, and fanwort.
RIDEM said that anglers and boaters should avoid using the ponds on the day of treatment and signs will be posted with information on temporary usage restrictions.
They also advise pets not drink from the water bodies for three days after the treatment.
Residents are advised not to take invasive weeds from bodies of water as transport of any plant or plant part into or out of any Rhode Island waterbody is prohibited.
More information on the treatments and other projects can be viewed on the DEM website.
