2 hospitalized after boat fire in Massachusetts

GLOUCESTER, Mass. (WLNE) — Fire officials in Gloucester, Massachusetts said two people were hurt after a boat caught fire early Monday morning.

According to Fire Chief Eric Smith, at approximately 8:58 a.m., the department received reports that a boat was on fire near the Blynman Bridge with people in the water.

When crews arrived on the scene, they said the boat was fully engulfed in flames.

Officials said the two people on the boat were safely pulled from the water and taken to area hospitals to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Gloucester police started the attack on the fire, and the local Harbormaster towed the burning vessel to shore where the fire department was able to extinguish the blaze.

The U.S. Coast Guard also provided assistance managing the waterway while efforts were underway. The Blynman Bridge was briefly closed during the response as well.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
