BOSTON (WLNE) — The MSPCA-Angell will waive adoptions for small animals this weekend.

Shelter officials said they’ve ran out of room for animals like birds, guinea pigs, rabbits, and ferrets — to the point where one MSPCA shelter has had to keep cages in the lobby.

“It’s absolutely critical that adopters step up and take some of these guys home,” said Bryn Rogers, MSPCA-Angell assistant director of adoptions and programs.

“We want to be there for people in the community who need to surrender small animals, but we won’t be able to do that if we can’t free up some space,” Rogers said.

Rogers said there’s a 24% decrease in small animal adoptions from last year.

“We’ve been spending a lot of time and attention this summer on dogs, and for good reason given the ongoing national crisis, but we still need to find homes for a lot of other animals in our care,” Rogers said.

Shelter officials said small animal adoptions can cost up to $85 normally.

They will be free at the MSPCA adoption shelters in Boston, Salem, Centerville, and Methuen from Friday to Sunday.

Those looking for a new family member this weekend can register in advance, although it’s not required.
