Man, 19, killed in crash that launched engine into Belchertown home
BELCHERTOWN, Mass. (WLNE) — Massachusetts State Police announced a 19-year-old man is dead after a crash that sent an engine through the wall of a home.
According to police, at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, they attempted to stop a 2011 Nissan Altima but the driver left the scene.
The driver sped up, ran a red light at an intersection with Route 9, then lost control around a curve and went off the right side of the road, police said.
As a result of the impact, officials said the Altima’s engine block was launched from under the hood and became airborne. The engine traveled through the brick wall on the outside of a home on North Main Street and came to rest on the second floor of the home.
The driver was also ejected from the Altima after it struck the outside of the house. First responders determined he was deceased on the scene.
A 2020 Buick Envision parked in the driveway of the home on North Main Street also sustained damage in the crash.
No passengers were in the Altima at the time of the crash and nobody in the house was injured.
The crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police.
