Corrections officer injured in altercation between 2 inmates at ACI’s Maximum Security facility
CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — A fight between two inmates at the ACI’s Maximum Security facility prompted a large emergency response and lockdown of the facility.
According to Department of Corrections officials, the altercation occurred earlier this evening and prompted a response from DOC officers and Rhode Island State Police.
During the initial response, authorities said a correctional officer suffered minor injuries and was treated on the scene before seeking treatment.
That officer has since returned to work, officials said.
Correctional officers said they will interview potential witnesses as the investigation develops.
ABC 6 News crews were on Pontiac Avenue where multiple cruisers, including Rhode Island State Police cruisers and police vans were parked outside the prison.
Gov. Dan McKee posted to social media saying he was made aware of the situation at the ACI, saying in part: “Emergency personnel are being deployed to manage the situation in coordination with DOC officers and staff with the top priority of de-escalation and keeping everyone safe.”
