Providence man charged with assault to murder for allegedly slashing man’s throat

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A Providence man is facing an assault to murder charge after allegedly slashing a man’s throat in Rehoboth over the weekend.
On Saturday, Aug. 26, medical staff at Rhode Island Hospital called the Providence Police Department to report they were treating the victim of a stabbing.
Police said initial information provided to them by the victim led them to notify officers in Rehoboth, as the victim said they believed the stabbing happened in their town.
According to officials, the victim and the suspect, identified as Juan Alvarez, 35, of Providence, are coworkers employed at a farm in Rehoboth.
It is alleged that on Aug. 26, the victim and Alvarez got into an argument where a fight ensued. Officials believe Alvarez slashed the victim’s throat with a knife.
The victim sustained a significant laceration to his lower neck and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he is reportedly in stable condition.
Early Wednesday morning, Seekonk police detectives executed an operation where Alvarez was taken into custody without incident.
He is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault to murder.
Alvarez was arraigned in Taunton District Court Wednesday afternoon and will be held for a dangerousness hearing at a later date, officials said.
