Taunton gas station closes due to gas leak

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — Mayor Shaunna O’Connell said that the city’s Fire and Police Departments have implemented safety measures on Middleboro Avenue due to a gas leak.
The fire department was notified of a possible gas leak from pumps at Amaro’s gas station on Aug. 28, which was confirmed by the fire inspector.
On Saturday, a Taunton Police officer noticed gasoline vapor coming from a drainage manhole near the gas station.
O’Connell said that the fire department secured the area and installed a vapor barrier to prevent the leak from spreading, and that a firefighter and police officer are stationed in the area to “ensure public safety.”
She added that Amaro’s has voluntarily closed, and that the Amaro family has been working with the city’s Board of Health, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, a licensed site professional, and contractors to mitigate the situation.
“The DEP and other officials are also testing businesses and buildings in the area to ensure no other gas vapors are present,” O’Connell said. “No additional contamination has been found at this time. Such testing will be ongoing.”
