I-295 and Mendon Road to close overnight this week
CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said it will temporarily close sections of Interstate 295 overnight this week in Cumberland.
RIDOT said the closures will occur on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and are associated with the replacement of the Mendon Road Bridge.
The closures take place between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. the following morning, with signed detours in place.
The department said that the detours will be as follows:
On Tuesday night, I-295 South will be closed, with all traffic taking the Mendon Road off-ramp, following Route 122 North, to Route 99 South to Route 146 South to return to I-295.
On Wednesday night, I-295 North will be closed, with the detour using the Route 146 South exit to the Route 116 exit, then following Route 116 East to Route 122 North to the on-ramp back to I-295.
On both nights Mendon Road at the bridge will be closed.
The department said detours for Mendon Road will be:
Mendon Road southbound should use Route 120 to Route 114 South to Route 116 West to return to Mendon Road.
Mendon Road northbound should use the on-ramp to I-295 North, reverse direction to I-295 South at the Diamond Hill Road interchange, then take the Mendon Road exit.
RIDOT added that on Sept 22., travel lanes on in the area of Exit 20 at the bridge will be reduced from three lanes to two through late 2024 to allow for reconstruction of the bridge.
