Warwick Police investigating overnight robbery

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — A convenience store in Warwick was robbed early this morning, the suspect making off with cash and cigarettes. Now police are asking for help figuring out who did it.

The good news is this store had plenty of security cameras so police have the entire crime recorded. But the bad news is the suspect did a good job of hiding his face so now police are relying on a unique characteristic to help identify him.

Caught on camera! A man bursts into the Season’s Marketplace on Quaker Lane wielding a screwdriver or knife demanding money from the clerk.

“We cant be everywhere but the surveillance cameras, they don’t lie, they don’t discriminate,” says Detective Lieutenant Scott Robillard with the Warwick Police Department.

This store has plenty of cameras, police caught the crime from all angles.

It happened after 3 this morning. The clerk was alone in the store and in the middle of a money drop when he burst in, cash was sitting out on the counter.

“He was so focused on getting his cigarettes and telling the cashier to fill up the bag he overlooked the money that was sitting on the counter so instead of getting off with a bout $500 he got $100,” says Robillard.

The clerk wasn’t hurt and police said he gave the best description he could but they’re now turning to the public to help identify the suspect. They hope the way he ran around the counter will stick out to someone.

“Just like anything in an investigation we looked for something that sticks out and in this case, when the suspect ran back around the counter he definitely walked in a particular way, a peculiar way. I think that definitely somebody out there will be able to watch the video and match it up,” says Robillard.

Police say they have a pretty high success rate when they post surveillance pictures and video on Facebook.
