PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families disclosed the death of a 3-year-old on Thursday.

Damaris Teixeira, a spokesperson for the department, said the child died on August 2.

Teixeira added that DCYF was involved with the child’s family in the past, but not at the time of the death.

An investigation determined that “maltreatment” contributed to the fatality.

The Office of the Child Advocate has been notified.

Teixeira said because of “confidentiality laws, DCYF is prohibited from sharing additional information.”
