New Bedford firefighters battle blaze started by electric scooter

The New Bedford Fire Department shared this photo of the lithium-ion battery-powered scooter that started a fire Monday morning.

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WLNE) — The New Bedford Fire Department said an electric scooter was the cause of a fire in a home on Crapo Street Monday morning.

According to the department, they received calls reporting some type of “explosion” and fire in a two-story, two-family home.

When crews arrived on the scene, they said there was smoke on both floors and a fire in the basement.

After further investigation, crews located a 60-volt electric scooter powered by lithium-ion batteries. The scooter was quickly removed from the home and the building was ventilated.

A hazardous materials crew came to dispose of the batteries, removing them from the scooter and placing them in a steel container filled with CellBlockEX, a fire suppressant meant specifically for lithium ion battery-related fires. The container was later taken to an approved storage site.

The fire was investigated by the New Bedford Fire Department and several adults were evaluated as well as six kids but nobody was hospitalized.

None of the residents were displaced.
