Man recently released from prison faces murder charge in Central Falls shooting, police say

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WLNE) — A man who was recently released from prison in Massachusetts faces a murder charge in the shooting death of a man in Central Falls.

Central Falls police and city officials provided an update Tuesday on the investigation regarding the shooting over the weekend.

Officers responded to a shots fired call around 9:15 p.m. Saturday.

Police said 27-year-old Emmanuel Torres Plaza was shot multiple times in the area of Dexter Street and Sumner Avenue. He died on scene.

Soon after, a witness called police after seeing someone set a car on fire in Plainville, Massachusetts.

Police said Luis Lopez, 39, was soon taken into custody.

Plainville officers said they found two guns, a bulletproof vest, gloves, and a mask on Lopez.

Lopez, of Pawtucket, recently finished a 15-year prison sentence in Massachusetts.

The Sun Chronicle reports that he was charged with manslaughter for his role in a killing in Foxborough in 2007.

Lopez was being held in Massachusetts, and will be extricated to Rhode Island to face a murder charge.

The 39-year-old and Torres Plaza knew each other, but police did not elaborate on their relationship or a possible motive.

The shooting was one of three killings in Rhode Island over the weekend.
