5 Taunton officers hospitalized for stab wounds after brief car chase

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — A Taunton police officer was hospitalized after being stabbed multiple times after a brief pursuit Tuesday night.

According to the police, at approximately 6:45 p.m., officers were attempting to stop a car when a man approached them and began speaking aggressively.

An officer later pulled that man over on County Street for driving erratically.

When the officer attempted to stop the suspect, who is identified at this time as a man, he allegedly fled, almost striking the officer with his car.

According to police, the suspect then led them to to his home on West Britannia Street, which he crashed his car into.

That’s where he allegedly slashed two officers and stabbed another multiple times in the face and back of the head. The chief of police was also stabbed in the chest, officials said.

The officer stabbed in the head was taken by helicopter to Morton Hospital where he remains in serious condition. The chief was later released from the hospital.

The suspect was eventually arrested and according to the Taunton Police Chief, five officers were hospitalized for injuries after the incident.

Police said the suspect is known to other departments and is facing multiple felony charges.

No further information was immediately released.
