Berkley police rescue 2 kayakers in distress from Taunton River

BERKLEY, Mass. (WLNE) — The Berkley Police Department said the swift actions and effective coordination of their officers resulted in the successful rescue of kayakers in distress in the Taunton River.

According to police, at approximately 12:49 p.m., Wednesday, their department got a call from two kayakers who found themselves battling strong winds and unable to reach the shore.

Officers were promptly dispatched to the scene and upon arrival, they found the kayakers struggling in the water and immediately jumped into action.

The department said the officers, without hesitation, waded into the water through mud to reach the kayakers and were able to pull the two women to shore.

In a post to social media, the department thanked officers Engstrom, Freire and Detective Sergeant Newhook, along with police dispatcher Avilla for their quick decision-making that likely prevented the situation from turning dire.

“We are immensely proud of the exemplary actions demonstrated by our officers and dispatcher, whose dedication and professionalism serve as an inspiration to us all,” Berkley Police Chief Christopher Baker said.
