Manatee seen in Rhode Island waters found dead

CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WLNE) — The manatee seen in Rhode Island waters last month has died, the animal rescue program at Mystic Aquarium said Friday.
Spokeswoman Sarah Callan said a boater found the dead manatee floating between Prudence Island and Hog Island.
The rescue team had been trying to track it, but the animal was so active that it was difficult to pinpoint an exact location.
Callan said the manatee was very healthy when it was seen a few weeks ago in Narragansett.
She noted that it’s extremely unlikely for there to have been multiple manatees in the same area.
She said the manatee seen before had a distinctive scar on its fin. Anyone who sees the manatee is asked to take photos and call the animal rescue hotline at 860-572-5955 ext. 107.
