PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island will hold a vigil in solidarity with Israel on Monday.

A community prayer vigil will be held at the Dwares JCC at 401 Elmgrove Ave. in Providence beginning at 5:30 p.m.

“We will pray for and honor the memory of the hundreds of innocent Israelis who have tragically been murdered and pray for peace and the safe return of those who have been kidnapped,” the group wrote on social media.

Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, Gov. Dan McKee, and members of the Jewish community are expected to speak.

Israel was attacked by Hamas over the weekend, during the holidays of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.

The group called the surprise attack a “horrific escalation of violence that targeted innocent civilians.”

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, declared the country officially at war.

As of Monday morning, the Associated Press reported at least 9 Americans were killed in the weekend Hamas attacks.
